Websites work towards creating greater visibility for themselves in the crowded spaces of the World Wide Web. Technology has made way for many ways in which visibility can be enhanced. For an avid web surfer, the search engine is the window the world of the internet marketing. But net surfers seldom realize the importance of the words we type into search bars. If one was to visualize the page as a real window with a complex world existing behind it we would see the kind of actions we trigger by typing a particular word. You would see websites queued up on the other side of this window, all vying to be on top of this list. Websites competing with each other for a click from you, the target user. Indeed, because there are many websites that actually pay search engines in the hope that it gives them an edge over competitors. The growing popularity of the internet and marketing on the internet has given rise to the phenomena of search engine marketing or SEM. The birth of this phenomenon is but natural. The fundamental principle of business is to offer that which is in demand. And considering the demand for visibility, it is but obvious that businesses would spring up that offer to help companies increase their visibility. SEM is aimed at improving the visibility of a website on its SERPS (search engine results page). There are three main methods of carrying out Search Engine Marketing, a) search engine optimization (SEO) b) pay per click c) paid inclusion. Search Engine Optimization (SEO) entails a revision of the content and structure of a website, so that it ranks high on the SERPs. Search engine optimization is, contrary to what the name suggests, a way to optimize the web page. Search engines work on the basis of specific algorithms, and the idea behind SEO is to keep keywords on websites in sync with these algorithms. Every search engine has its own specific algorithm using which it ranks and re-ranks pages. In fact, for words that searched often, a search engine does not create a fresh SERP but merely saves it for subsequent searches. From time to time the website would find new pages to rank; this process of locating new pages is called crawling. So what exactly does SEO do? Well, most often than not process of SEO means a change in the structure of the content. As mentioned earlier, search engines have specific algorithms based on which they rank sites. At the best of times, an SEO service provider will offer you an insight into a sites’ algorithm but obviously not what it specifically is. What that means is that this restructuring is based on an understanding of the target audience.  And so we return to the importance of those words that net surfers casually type into search bars. To avoid such an unethical practice, many firms that provide SEO services in India recommend other ways of optimizing website. For instance, the presence of a navigation system on websites makes it more search engine friendly because it is considered more user-friendly. The internal link structure of a website is also changed, and irrelevant links are done away with.  Even though the idea is to optimize, it is advisable to plan the SEO process ahead of time.

We take it for granted the logic with which a search engine directs us to a list comprising of hundreds, many a times more, sites that match our search.

So anything, really, to attract that one click.

Pay Per Click advertising on the other hand involves bidding on “keywords” that the company expects would be popular amongst their target user group. The advertiser has to pay only when the user clicks on this ad. Paid Inclusion is the third method used for SEM, wherein website owners pay search engines to be listed. Even though, paid inclusion is the most straightforward method, some leading search engines do not offer it.

These words, keywords as they are called, are what direct searchers to websites. On the other hand, websites wait, fully armed with these keywords, so that search engines would rank them high on their list. There are some websites that try to affect the results by crowding their pages with these keywords—increasing keyword density on the pages. There are two obvious byproducts of this action called “keyword stuffing”. Firstly, considered an unethical practice, many search engines identify such websites and ban them which means they are not listed at all. Secondly, to a user the content structure comes across as highly unnatural because of the excessive, often unnecessary use of certain words.

Many website owners use SEO as a corrective measure. The sooner search engine optimization is done the better chances the website would have vis-à-vis its competitors.
